Safe Routes to School – Galway City

Transport Insights’ team are delighted to be partnering with TOBIN Consulting Engineers in providing transport planning support to Galway City Council for five schools as part of the citywide ‘Safe Routes to School’ programme. The five current schools are Galway Educate Together National School, St. Joseph’s Special School, Scoil Iognáid, Scoil Bhríde and Radharc na Mara.

The Safe Routes to School programme is an initiative of the Department of Transport that was developed by the National Transport Authority and An Taisce’s Green-Schools as a response to the need to support schools to increase walking and cycling as a means of travelling to and from schools.

Our consultant team members, in collaboration with Galway City Council, the schools and other key stakeholders, have undertaken a comprehensive baseline review of travel behaviours and transport conditions on the local road network surrounding each school with a particular focus on the front of school environment, and identified potential measures (guided by Safe Routes to School’s Design Guide) to be advanced to facilitate and promote active travel at each school. A non-statutory public consultation for each school scheme was initiated in May 2022, seeking feedback from the school communities and wider public. Transport Insights will continue to work with Galway City Council and key stakeholders to progress the Safe Routes to School programme throughout 2022 and beyond.
