Northwest Business Park Bus Depot

Client: Go-Ahead Transport Services (Dublin) Limited
Duration: December 2024 to May 2025
Project Summary
Transport Insights was appointed by Go-Ahead Transport Services (Dublin) Limited to provide transport consultancy support in relation to a proposed bus depot facility at Northwest Business Park, Ballycoolin, Dublin 15. The Client sought a change of use of an existing warehousing/ logistics site to a stabling facility with capacity for ca. 200 no. buses to serve its expanded bus service operations in the Greater Dublin Area, with the site also intended to feature ancillary washing, filling, and servicing/ maintenance facilities.
The commission’s scope comprised preliminary traffic engineering design advice with respect to the bus parking facilities’ layout, in addition to preparing a Traffic and Transport Assessment (TTA) and Framework Mobility Management Plan (MMP) in relation to the proposed development. A bespoke traffic generation model was developed to accurately forecast the movements of buses, fleet cars, and private cars throughout a typical day of the proposed development’s future operations. The obtained outputs were fed into the industry-standard Junctions 9 (PICADY module) software to quantify the likely impact of the subject development on the performance of 3 no. local junctions during both network and development peak hours.
Added Value Brought to Project
Initial Transport Insights’ inputs have led to development of a highly efficient bus parking facility layout to maximise the site’s stabling capacity. The traffic impact assessment and mobility management approaches pursued were accepted by the Planning Authority (Fingal County Council), with the proposed development receiving a final grant of permission in July 2025.
