N56 Falcarragh to Gortahork Road Scheme Phase 2

Client: Donegal County Council
Duration: January to December 2024
Project Summary
Transport Insights, in partnership with Clandillon Civil Consulting, was appointed by Donegal County Council to carry out Phase 2 Options Selection for the N56 Falcarragh to Gortahork Road Scheme.
In undertaking the commission, strategic options carried through from Phase 1 were further developed into potential route alignment options. Appraisal of these preliminary route alignment options (Stage 2 of Option Selection Process) was undertaken in line with Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s Project Appraisal Guidelines (TII PAG) and the Department of Transport’s Transport Appraisal Framework (DoT TAF). The subsequent Stage 3 assessment comprised the selection of a preferred route alignment option.
Transport Insights led the appraisal of the Economic, Safety and Accessibility impacts of the scheme, including the specification and procurement of transport surveys, the outputs of which informed the development of a traffic model.
Added Value Brought to Project
Transport Insights thoroughly reviewed the characteristics and nature of the scheme and developed a bespoke modelling methodology proportionate to the project needs which was submitted and subsequently approved by TII. The completed Project Appraisal Report detailed the option selection process, and set out the rationale for the preferred option to be advanced to Phase 3 – that project phase is currently advancing, again with support from Transport Insights’ team.
