Bennettsbridge Roundabout Modelling Support

Bennettsbridge Roundabout Modelling Support

Client: Kilkenny County Council
Duration: January to May 2025

Project Summary

Transport Insights was commissioned by Kilkenny County Council to undertake an operational performance assessment of the Bennettsbridge Road Roundabout, a four-arm roundabout connecting the N10 Ring Road and R700 Bennettsbridge Road.

The assessment sought to develop an enhanced understanding of the junction’s historic and current operational performance, and having done so, to assess various potential mitigation measures, identify an emerging preferred option, and further refine that junction layout. The review also considered active travel provision through the junction while also recognising the strategic function of the N10 corridor.

In undertaking the assessment, the project team reviewed an existing traffic model, CAD junction layout files, and available multi-modal survey data, and developed a new junction model using the industry standard Junctions 9 (ARCADY) traffic modelling software. The traffic model was developed and validated according to the Transport Infrastructure Ireland Project Appraisal Guidelines (TII PAG) standards and assessed various options to enhance the junction’s performance in the context of active travel facilities provision.

Added Value Brought to Project

Transport Insights, making use of all available data, calibrated specific parameters of the junction model in order to more accurately represent current traffic conditions through the junction. The developed model was used to assess the traffic impact of revised junction layout options, and in doing so support the identification and refinement of a preferred junction layout.
