Ballybrit Life Sciences Facility Masterplan

Ballybrit Life Sciences Facility Masterplan

Client: Boston Scientific
Duration: May 2023 to December 2024

Project Summary

Transport Insights was commissioned, as part of a multi-disciplinary PM Group-led team, to provide preliminary transport engineering design advice and to undertake a Traffic and Transport Assessment (TTA) in relation to preparation of a Campus Masterplan for a major life sciences facility at Ballybrit, Galway. The TTA was accompanied by a Mobility Management Plan (MMP) and comprehensive parking demand analysis. The Masterplan shall support further development of building facilities within the Campus, the provision of enhanced active and sustainable travel facilities, plus the provision and redistribution of car parking facilities across the Campus to better suit the Client’s operational needs.

Analytical activities were underpinned by the specification, commissioning and analysis of traffic and parking survey data collection covering the site and key junctions on the local and national road networks to determine the need for and impact of the proposed changes to car parking facilities on-Campus. In addition, detailed employee and travel behavioural data was utilised to establish traffic arrival, departure and assignment patterns. Engagement with Galway City Council and relevant transport authorities also supported development of the Masterplan and the TTA’s analytical scope.

Added Value Brought to Project

The TTA, and supporting MMP and parking demand analysis, provided a strong rationale for the Campus Masterplan, balancing potential car parking demand/ provision with the delivery/ integration of improved active and sustainable travel facilities on- and off-Campus. The TTA concluded that the development would not materially impact on the operation of the existing N6 or the proposed N6 Galway City Ring Road. The application was granted planning permission by Galway City Council in January 2025.
